While in Nicaragua we made a visit to the Volcano Masaya. An active, fuming, semi-angry volcano that regularly spit out boulders. Conveniently, (or not so convenient if Masaya spits out a boulder on your car) you are able to drive your car right up to the edge of the volcano, where you park facing away from the pit in case you end up needing to flee flying rocks or hot lava. From the crater lip we had amazing views down into the pit and of the surrounding area. It was pretty crazy to imagine that at one point the entire area had been a sea of flowing hot lava (and could be again at any moment). After we spent the recommended 10-15 minutes at the crater lip (due to the fact that the fumes are toxic and we did experience difficulty breathing) we headed over to the now non active crater (and less toxic) crater next door.
