A day trip to the volcano Masaya...

Next door to Masaya’s active crater is an inactive crater which is overgrown with trees, grass, and other vegetation since the soil is so mineral and nutrient dense. Its an amazing view to stand above both craters and view one dark and fuming hole while on your other side is a lush green valley. All in all the volcano was an amazing and worthwhile stop.

Not far from the volcano is the Laguna de Apoyo. It may be one of my favorite experiences of the trip. It is a warm, clean, beautiful lake that now resides in an inactive crater. We pulled into one of the many hostels, restaurants, and attractions along the lake to have lunch, swim, sunbathe, and jump off the docks! Even though the edge of the lake has many attractions, the place is practically empty and felt like we had the place to ourselves. I wish we had had more time to spend here exploring.
