Dunas de Itaunas…
Dunas de Itaunas…
Our first day trip from Guriri, where we were staying for the week was to the Dunas de Itaunas to hang out at the beach. To get to the beach you drive through a very tiny beach town alongside the Itauna’s river. After you cross the river two or three minutes you then park and climb up a large sand dune. Here I am thinking where the hell is the beach? At the top of the dune you can look out across an expansive dune area to see the beach and small restaurants off in the distance. But first you have to cross the expansive sandy dunes, where underneath lies an entire town that was buried 50 years ago. The dunes slowly blew over and covered the entire town, which now resides next to the river. Up until last year you could see the church’s steeple poking a foot high out of the sand. Now it is also completely covered. Crazy story, beautiful beach, definitely worth a visit.
